November 2016

We are excited about our new academy, new teachers,
and fabulous students!
Our Event Marketing students had a tour of the Nashville Entrepreneur Center on October 21st!  The Nashville Entrepreneur Center helps entrepreneurs make their business ideas a reality by pairing innovators with business experts who give the entrepreneurs advice and resources to start and grow their business ideas. They allowed the students to tour the facility and gave insights about the demands of taking a business idea and transforming it into a reality.
Celebrating the MOST ATTENDED SHOW in Bobcat Players' history!  Last month's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde" sold nearly 400 tickets, and our patrons were thrilled with this fabulous show!  Congratulations to Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Schleimer, and all the Bobcat Players and their families!

Congratulations once again to the Overton High School Marching Band!  The band performed at the regionally-famous Contest of Champions, a competition held at Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday, October 22nd.

The Overton Marching Band placed 4th in the competition, coming in only .05 point behind the third-place McGavock.  Congratulations to Mr. Hill, Ms. Miller, and all of the band and guard members on a fabulous showing!
The Bobcat Players take on TPAC!

On October 24th, JOHS theatre students saw Romeo & Juliet performed by the American Shakespeare Center.  They also got to learn about careers in theatre from Education Coordinator Cassie Lefever.
Our Players also attended a workshop with the actors from the show and were given a backstage tour.  This tour included seeing the actor's green room, load-in dock, light booth, sound booth, backstage of all three TPAC stages and private dressing rooms, including the "Tennessee Suite" used by the stars, and first used by Dolly Parton!

Mr. Baker and EMMP student Gina Gad went to McMurray Middle on October 26th after school to promote DECA and our academy to all the 8th graders. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.
On October 28th, Sam Douthit, Zach Cate, John Livingston interviewed Angie McCreight the owner of Nashville School Rock for their DECA research project in which they plan to own and operate their own School of Rock franchise.

The choir performed very well at the Country Music Hall of Fame on Monday, November 21st!  Students sang excerpts from a musical, some popular tunes, and several traditional choir pieces.  In addition to the performance, students toured the Country Music Hall of Fame museum, and were able to tour and experience the Historic Studio B.

Counselor Connection

Class of 2017: Senior Year is Here!

Firstly, hello! I am Ms. Bates, the new EMMP School Counselor here at JOH! As a school counselor, one of my responsibilities is to help facilitate the college application process with senior students. This process is known to be exciting, joyful, and confusing at times. But please don't fret- The students at JOH have many opportunities and resources to be successful when applying to college. With Senior year being such an exciting time, it's important to keep in mind the "business" side of things, as well. (EMMP pun intended). As many of our students at John Overton are wrapping up their high school experience and moving onto their next phases of life, there are a few important dates, times, resources, and events that it would be helpful to be aware of.

One helpful resource is the college search located at https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org. This search engine allows students to search for colleges based on location, size, clubs/activities/,majors, financial need, AND MORE!

Another big to-do at this time is actually APPLYING for colleges. When a student has a list of 3-6 colleges that they are seriously interested in pursuing, the student can go to that college's website, click "Admissions," click, "Apply Now." And begin their application process. This may look just a different on each school's website, but it will generally follow a similar format. Please note: Most applications require an application fee.

Next, students should be requesting transcripts and sending their ACT scores to their schools. In my office, located in room 122, there is a transcript request form to fill out. I will mail those out for you as soon as that form is complete! To send ACT scores log into http://www.act.org/, and click "Scores" to send scores! The first four scores are free to send. Typically after that, each score will cost about $12.00.

FAFSA, FAFSA, FAFSA. The FAFSA is now open for students and parents/guardians to fill out together at https://fafsa.ed.gov  This process usually takes an hour or two. It will require a.) Social Security Number or Alien Registration Number b.)  And your most recent Federal Income Tax Returns. Please keep in mind that January 17th is the deadline to fill out the FAFSA to be eligible for most grants funded by the state.

Students should also be gathering letters of recommendation from teachers and their counselor to submit to their colleges. To request these letters, students can ask verbally or write an email or letter to the person they wish to write their letter of recommendation.

Lastly, students are always welcome to drop by my office or make an appointment with our Oasis College Counselor Anna West for extra or individual college help! My email address is Jordan.Bates@mnps.org and Ms. West's email address is Awest@oasiscenter.org.
I believe that education is what leads to a successful future. I attended the University of Tennessee at Martin and majored in marketing with goals becoming a corporate business executive and later attained my master's in business administration from UT Martin. Along my educational journey, I worked as a manager at CVS/Pharmacy and decided to leave the business world and pursue the education profession. As a result, I enrolled in UT Martin (for a third time) and obtained my master's in secondary education. During my time in management, I realized that I could make a bigger impact with my career choices by influencing and encouraging others to take advantage of educational opportunities. My favorite part about educating is the fact that I can make an impact and positive influence on our future leaders and expand their knowledge about how to transform impossibilities into possibilities.
The Event Marketing and Musical Performance Academy is the first to choose a student of the month, and EMMP voted for  Sean Pak! Mr. Baker, the lead teacher of the Marketing pathway, nominated Pak for his achievements in the classroom in just a short two year span.

Mr. Baker views Sean as a “great representation“ of the EMMP academy, “by being part of the academic organization DECA and for his talents playing the piano. Sean excels in both the marketing and music performance pathways of EMMP“.
